How well do you understand “Lazy Eye”? There’s are so many myth and misunderstading to lazy eye. What is lazy eyes? What causes it? How can we prevent it? Today’s we will share about lazy eye (Amblyopia).

What causes it?

Amblyopia starts when an eye has better focus than the others. This is because there’s a breakdown in how the brain and the eye work together. The brain itself cannot recognize the sight from the other eye. Sometimes, one is more farsighted or has lots of astigmatism, but the other doesn’t. When a child’s brain gets both a blurry image and a clear image, the brain automatically will ignore the blurry one. If this goes on for months or years in a young child, vision in the blurry eye will getting worse. It’s this misalignment that led to the term “lazy eyes” or amblyopia.

How is Amblyopia Diagnosed?

All children should have their eye test before they are school-age. Head to trusted vision care center or spectacle shop. They will make sure that your children :

  • Has nothing blocks the light coming into her eyes.
  • Both eyes see equally well
  • Each eye moves like it should.

If there’s any problem that stated above, the optometrist or optician will suggest you to take her to an eye specialist and they will suggest some eye exercise for your children, it depends the condition of the children eye. If you have a history background of amblyopia runs in your family, your children is more likely to get it. Always remember, early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to good result, don’t be afraid and bring your children to have an eye test.

How can it be treated?

Most kids with amblyopia also need glasses to help their eyes focus. The golden treatment period is before 7 years old, make sure to take your children to have an eyecheck every 6 months / year.

Besides, doctor will give your children a patch to wear over the “strong” eye which is the eye that see things clearer. This is to let force the “weak” eye to see things clearly. At first, they will have a hard time seeing with just the weak eye, but their vision will get better when they use the eye patch for a period, it might take weeks or months for that to happen. Follow doctor’s instruction carefully and bring your childen in for a scheduled visits to follow up on the case. In mild cases of amblyopia, doctor might suggest using an eye drop called atropine. It blurs the stong eye so your child won’t need to wear a patch, it’s all depend on the eye condition that doctor will suggest the best solution for your chilren.

Always remember to take your children to get eye exams early on. Amblyopia becomes much harder to treat after 7-9 years of age. And remember to follow doctor’s instruction about treatment, even when it’s very tough.

We are always welcome parents to take their children to come over TRUVIEW OPTICAL in SRI PETALING to have an eye test, we have professional here to serve you !

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a very common vision condition that the causes blurred vision. It might be the most misunderstood vision problem, even the name itself is very difficult to many people, “uh·stig·muh·ti·zm”. Which in malay, it been called as “silau”.

What Causes It?

Astigmatism is a common type of refractive error, which is the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Which means that the front surface of your eye(cornea) or the lens, inside the eyes, has mismatched curves. A normal eyeball is shaped like a perfectly round ball, when the light come into it and the light is bends evenly, which gives you a clear view. But if the eye is shaped like a egg shaped, or a football shape, light bend more direction more than a round shape, this will cause the vision became blurred.

How is It diagnosed?

You need a thorough eye examination, which might also find another problem which is nearsighted or farsighted. Because astigmatism symptoms come on slowly, when you notice there changes on your vision , you might need to have an eye examination.

Can astigmatism be treated?

Astigmatism can usually be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. People with astigmatism primarily schoose eyeglasses to improve their vision. They eyeglasses contain a special cylindrical lens prescription that compensates for the astigmatism. This provides additional power in specific parts of the lens.

The difference of eyeglass frame that you are using

By Ken Wong

There’s are few things to concerned when choosing a right frame. Most of the people are concerned only with price and style including me. There’s other factors to consider too, such as the durability, flexibility, lightweight and corrosion resistant the frame are.

The options for eyeglasses frames are never ending, here’s some guidance for you to consider with, keep calm and choose.

Plastic Frames

Most of the plastic eyeglass frames are made of Zyl (zylonite, cellulose acetate), which commonly will be named as acetate. There’s are few material more which is, Nylon, Kevlar and Optyl. Plastic frames are easier to be break more easily than metal frames

Acetate
The most commonly used plastic in eyeglass frames, it is affordable and easy to work with. It came along with huge variety of colors, textures and also patterns. Acetate is easily adjusted, but tends to get brittle with age.

Nylon
Nylon is lightweight, flexible and strong. It often chosen for sports and safety applications. These frame are often found in wraparound styles, because they are easily molded.

Metals

Metal is a popular material for eyeglass frames, particularly for rimless and semi-rimless frame styles. Available in a variety of shapes, colors, and styles. Below are few of common metals used in frames.

Titanium
Titanium is extremely lightweight and it will not rust, making it a very popular material for eyeglass frame. The metal alloy is very strong, and its hypoallergenic. Some titanium frames are made from an alloy that is a combination of titanium and other metals. In general, titanium alloy frames cost less than 100% of titanium frames.

B-Titanium
Beta-titanium (B-Titanium) is a mixture of Beta-alloy and Titanium. This makes B-titanium high in flexibility. B-titanium is strong, durable, lightweight, flexible, hypoallergenic and anti-corrosive. Which is more suitable among those with active lifestyles, especially children’s and athlete.

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is comprised mostly of iron, with a mixture of nickel, manganese, and chromium. Stainless steel is highly lustrous, and make a good thin and sturdy frame with strong corrosion resistance. Stainless steel frames are light weight , low toxicity, and high strength but it is less flexible compare to B-titanium and Titanium.

Allergic to your eyeglass frame?

Some people have an allergic reaction to the eyeglass frames. Causes a rash in the area that comes in contact with the glasses. One common allergy is a nickel allergy.
