by Ken Wong
on 6 December 2019

Almost everyone experiences itchy eyes from time to time. It’s extremely uncomfortable having itchy eyes. The worst part about it is that your really can’t haphazardly scratch away. (Rubbing your eye won’t help).

This artilce will help you to learn more about itchy eyes and how to get relief from these “itchy-ness” and to prevent allergies.

What actually cause itchy eyes?

There are many underlying problem and conditions can cause itchy eyes at night.

  • Allergies : Contact with a substance that casues itchy, red eyes, such as makeup, pollen, and dander.
  • Dry eyes : A condition where the eye does not get enough lubrication throughout the day.
  • Eyestrain : Caused from straing at computer screen/ electric screen for too long or driving long distances.
  • Conjunctivities : A highly contagius infection often referred to as pink eye that casyes red, itchy, and burning eyes.
  • Contact lens : Wearing contact lens for a very long time, or don’t replace them frequently enough.

How to prevent / relief itchy eyes?

1) Avoid allergens
The best approach to controlling your eye allergy symptoms is to do everything to limit your exposure to common allergens (pollen, dust and animal dander) that you know you are sensitive to. Try to stay indoors as much as possible when there is high count in high.

2)Remove your contact lens
Consider wearing glasses instead of contact lens during allergy season, or consider switching to daily disposable contacts lens that you discard after a single use to avoid the buildup of allergens and other debris on your lenses.

3)Warm and cool compresses

Try applying a compress for immediate relief of itchy eyes. Warm compresses over the eyes may help relieve itching due to allergies.

4)Use eye drops
There are many brands of non prescription eye drops are available now that are formulated to relieve itchiness, redness, and watery eyes caused by allergies. If your eye allergy symptons are mild, non-prescription eye drops for allergy relief may work very well for you and maybe less expensive than presciption eye drops or other medication.

See an eye doctor

The only way to know for sure if you have eye allergies and to get the best treatment advice is to see an eye doctor for a comprehensive eye exam. Above all, though it’s tempting, don’t rub itchy eyes. Rubbing releases more histamines that make the itching worse.

What to expect during an eye exam?

by Ken Wong
on 28 November 2019

There are many people not sure what to expect when they are having an eye exam. Especially if they’ve never had eye exam before or it’s been many years since their last exam. Here some “tips” what will you expecting, before eye examination and also after eye examination.

Types of eye specialist

  • Ophthalmologists. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who provide full eye care, such as giving you a complete eye exam, prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing and treating complex eye diseases, and performing eye surgery.
  • Optometrists. Optometrists provide many of the same services as ophthalmologists, such as evaluating your vision, prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing common eye disorders and treating selected eye diseases with drugs. If you have a complex eye problem or need surgery, your doctor can refer you to an ophthalmologist.
  • Opticians. Opticians fill prescriptions for eyeglasses, including assembling, fitting and selling them. Some opticians also sell contact lenses. Opticians do not provide eye health evaluations.

Do remember to bring over your prescription eyewear when you have an appointment with the eye specialist. They will want to make sure your prescription is the best one for you.

Your background and history

One of the most important parts in a eye examination is your health background and history. These information will let vision examinar to understand your risk of eye disease and vision problem. Expect following questions about your vision history :

  • Are you having any eye problems now?
  • Have you had any eye problems in the past?
  • Do you wear glasses or contacts now? If so, are you satisfied with them?
  • What health problems have you had in recent years?
  • Do you have any allergies to medications, food or other substances?
  • Have you ever had eye surgery?

Different types of eye exams

Visual Acuity Test
Among the first tests performed in an eye exams are visual acuity test that measure the sharpness of your vision. Your doctor will asks you to identify different letters of the alphabet printed on a chart (Snellen Chart). Each eye will test seperately.

Refraction
Those who don’t have 20/20 vision have what is referred to in most cases as a “Refractive Error.” The patient may have nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism or other eye conditions that prevent the patient from seeing 20/20. A refraction will tell the doctor which prescription lenses will correct your eyesight to achieve 20/20 vision or whichever amount your vision is correctable to.

Color Blind Test
You could have poor color vision and not even realize it. If you have difficulty distinguishing certain colors, your eye doctor may screen your vision for a color deficiency. To do this, your doctor shows you several multicolored dot-pattern tests.

If you have no color deficiency, you’ll be able to pick out numbers and shapes from within the dot patterns. If you do have a color deficiency, you’ll find it difficult to see certain patterns within the dots. Your doctor may use other tests, as well.

If you have questions about any diagnosed eye or vision conditions, or treatment recommendations, don’t hesitate to ask us for additional information or explanation. Thank you and Truview Optical wish you have a good day !

Children with uncorrected vision condition or eye health problems will face many barriers in their childhood. The impact to your children is unspeakable, it will affect their academy, socially and also athletically. High-quality eye care can help on breakthrough the barriers to help your children to reach their highest potential.

Vision doesn’t just happen. It develop as time goes, a child’s brain learns how to use eyes to see, just like it learns how to walk with legs or a mouth to form words. The longer a vision problem goes undiagnosed and untreated, the more a child’s brain learns accommodate the vision problem.

When should your child have a first eye exam?

You might be asking now, ” When should I take my children to have the first eye exam?”. According to Dr.Traboulsi , he recommends a comprehensive eye exam by an eye car professional if possible by age 1, to be repeated before kindergarden in children without any evident eye problems.

Here’s some tips that will help you to make sure your children has the best eye care from the start:

Sunglasses are way more than fashion

by Ken Wong
on 15 October 2019

Did you know that too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can harm your eyes? You probably only know that UV rays can cause sunburn and skin cancer.

Protect your eyes from UV

There are a few way to protect your precious eyes from the dangerous UV from the sun. Sunglasses, a fashion accesories that your wear frequent can actually block UV rays from the sun, but make sure your sunglasses are block 100 percent UV. Your eyes need protection even on clody days because the sun’s damaging UV rays can penetrate cloud cover.

Sunglass frame with a close-fitting wraparound style provide the best protection as they limit sunlight reaches your eye fromm all sides.

What happen if eyes exposed too much to UV?

According to myDr.com.au, the effects of sunlight on the eye are cumulative and depend on the length of time spent in the sun. For example, farmers are likely to develop problems such as cataracts at a younger age than office workers.

The sun’s damage to the eyes does not stop with cataracts. Exposure to both visible light and UV radiation is also a factor in the gradual degeneration of the retina, damage to the cornea, and pterygium (an overgrowth of the conjunctiva).

Cataract
UV rays are one of the know causes of cataracts, a clouding of the lens of the eye that can destroy your entire vision. Cataracts develop slowly, but eventually will result in symptoms, such as blurriness, halos around lights and blurred vision. Experts say that sunglasses help prevent cataracts. They recommend wearing them whenever the light is bright enough to make you squint, even on cloudy days and especially at high elevations.

Macular degeneration
Macular Degenertaion is a disease that leads to progressive loss of central vision, leaving a person with blurred or no vision at all in the centre of their field of vision. The Cancer Council Australia states that long term UV radiation exposure is associated with macular degeneration. UV is responsible for most damage to the macula – an area in the centre of your retina.

Avoidance is the key

Broadly speaking, wearing sunglasses and a hat will never hurt. Sunscreen is also generally a good idea. If the sun can hurt your eyes, it can also hurt your skin.

Remember that clouds are not an excuse to stare in the direction of the sun. Clouds do not block enough of the sun’s rays to mitigate harm.

Contact Lens

by Ken Wong
on 7 October 2019

What are contact lenses?

Yes, I believe all of us know what is a contact lens. A lens that is thin and curved placed on the film of tears that covers the surface of your eyes, commonly worn for vision correction. Contact lens are a very excellent choice for nearly anyone who needs vision correction and doesn’t want to wear eyeglasses full time or undergo LASIK surgery for their eyes.

Contact lens materials

Soft lenses are made from gel-like, water-containing plastics called hydrogels. These lenses are very thin and pliable and conform to the front surface of the eye. This lens is more popular and famous because they are more comfortable.

Silicone hydrogel lenses which is the advanced type of the soft contact lenses that are more breathable than regular hyrdrogel lenses and allow even more oxygen to teach the cornea. According to allaboutvision, silicone hydrogel contact lenses are the most popular lenses in US.

Gas permeable lenses which also been called GP or RGP lenses, it’s almost same like PMMA lenses but is more breathable compare to PMMA lenses. Because it’s more permeable to oxygen, GP lenses can be fit closer to the eye than PMMA lens, making it more comfortable than conventional hard lenses. GP lenses often provide sharper vision than soft and silicone hydrogel contacts lens espcially if you have asitgmatism.

PMMA lenses are made from a transparent rigid plastic material called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). PMMA lenses have excellent optics, but they do not transmit oxygen to the eye and can be difficult to adapt to.

Handling contact lens

Hygiene and cleanliness is an important aspect of proper contact lens care and handling your contact lens. Hands should be clean and free of any bacteria or any foreign substances when handle the lenses.

  • Always wash hands with soap and rinse completely, dry with a towel before touching your lenses.
  • Hanlde your lenses with your fingertips, and be careful to avoid contact with fingernails.
  • Always use fresh, unexpired lens care solutions. Always remove, clean, rinse, enzyme and disinfect your lens.
  • Never rinse your lenses in water from the tap, tap water might contains many impurities that can damage to your lenses and this may lead to eye infection or injury.

Think about the right contact lenses for you

While your optometrist make the final decision on which contact lenses are the right fit, your opinion counts, too! Before you head out for your eye exam, think about how often you’d like to replace your contacts with new ones. Daily contact lenses offer you a fresh new pair every day. That means no daily cleanings with no need to buy contact lens solution, making this option extremely convenient.

Myth of the lazy eye

by Ken Wong
on 21 September 2019

How well do you understand “Lazy Eye”? There’s are so many myth and misunderstading to lazy eye. What is lazy eyes? What causes it? How can we prevent it? Today’s we will share about lazy eye (Amblyopia).

What causes it?

Amblyopia starts when an eye has better focus than the others. This is because there’s a breakdown in how the brain and the eye work together. The brain itself cannot recognize the sight from the other eye. Sometimes, one is more farsighted or has lots of astigmatism, but the other doesn’t. When a child’s brain gets both a blurry image and a clear image, the brain automatically will ignore the blurry one. If this goes on for months or years in a young child, vision in the blurry eye will getting worse. It’s this misalignment that led to the term “lazy eyes” or amblyopia.

How is Amblyopia Diagnosed?

All children should have their eye test before they are school-age. Head to trusted vision care center or spectacle shop. They will make sure that your children :

  • Has nothing blocks the light coming into her eyes.
  • Both eyes see equally well
  • Each eye moves like it should.

If there’s any problem that stated above, the optometrist or optician will suggest you to take her to an eye specialist and they will suggest some eye exercise for your children, it depends the condition of the children eye. If you have a history background of amblyopia runs in your family, your children is more likely to get it. Always remember, early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to good result, don’t be afraid and bring your children to have an eye test.

How can it be treated?

Most kids with amblyopia also need glasses to help their eyes focus. The golden treatment period is before 7 years old, make sure to take your children to have an eyecheck every 6 months / year.

Besides, doctor will give your children a patch to wear over the “strong” eye which is the eye that see things clearer. This is to let force the “weak” eye to see things clearly. At first, they will have a hard time seeing with just the weak eye, but their vision will get better when they use the eye patch for a period, it might take weeks or months for that to happen. Follow doctor’s instruction carefully and bring your childen in for a scheduled visits to follow up on the case. In mild cases of amblyopia, doctor might suggest using an eye drop called atropine. It blurs the stong eye so your child won’t need to wear a patch, it’s all depend on the eye condition that doctor will suggest the best solution for your chilren.

Always remember to take your children to get eye exams early on. Amblyopia becomes much harder to treat after 7-9 years of age. And remember to follow doctor’s instruction about treatment, even when it’s very tough.

We are always welcome parents to take their children to come over TRUVIEW OPTICAL in SRI PETALING to have an eye test, we have professional here to serve you !

Astigmatism? What’s that?

by Ken Wong
26 August 2019

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a very common vision condition that the causes blurred vision. It might be the most misunderstood vision problem, even the name itself is very difficult to many people, “uh·stig·muh·ti·zm”. Which in malay, it been called as “silau”.

What Causes It?

Astigmatism is a common type of refractive error, which is the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Which means that the front surface of your eye(cornea) or the lens, inside the eyes, has mismatched curves. A normal eyeball is shaped like a perfectly round ball, when the light come into it and the light is bends evenly, which gives you a clear view. But if the eye is shaped like a egg shaped, or a football shape, light bend more direction more than a round shape, this will cause the vision became blurred.

How is It diagnosed?

You need a thorough eye examination, which might also find another problem which is nearsighted or farsighted. Because astigmatism symptoms come on slowly, when you notice there changes on your vision , you might need to have an eye examination.

Can astigmatism be treated?

Astigmatism can usually be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery. People with astigmatism primarily schoose eyeglasses to improve their vision. They eyeglasses contain a special cylindrical lens prescription that compensates for the astigmatism. This provides additional power in specific parts of the lens.

Don’t worry if you have any question about on astigmatism, you can ask here or you can come Truview Optical to have an eyecheck for yourself and your family and friends. We are glad to help you. Thank you

Try frame that are slightly wider than your forehead to add more balance and beauty to your features.

Round Shaped Faces

With a proportion that’s relatively equal in width and length, round faces should look to sharp-angled frames to add a little extra definition and depth.
